The OPPO A5 2020 Tested: Excellent Battery Life, Great Cost

If Oppo is a new company to you then maybe you're unsure if OPPO makes quality devices. Don't fear, however, for the company is well established in its homeland and has invested quite a few years building up to the release in Europe & elsewhere, with quality products such as Reno 10X already made a splash.

Oppo's A5 2020 doesn't purport to be a flagship device, however it does give a very compelling features at a great price. So if you have been eyeing up the Motorola G8 Plus or the Moto One series phone, then the excellent savings provided by Oppo A5 2020, along with the sizeable battery, present a case for its consideration.

A5 2020 Build & Screen

Size: 163.6 mm x 75.4 x 9.1mm
Weight: approx 195 g
Colours: Dazzling White, Mirror Black
Screen Size: 6.5 inch LCD, 1600 x 720 resolution
3.5mm headphones jack
Rear fingerprint scan sensor

With no immediate indicators that the The OPPO A5 2020 is a entry level device. The semi-reflective back, with the Oppo logo transfer & the words "designed for A-series", has a bright shne, and its camera and rear fingerprint scanner have been positioned in a tidy way. The problem is, the black colour of this phone is more of a grey, really is easy to get dirty, & we thought that scanner a little high in its position, too close to the camera.

The same can be said to the front 6.5-inch screen is big, but not unwieldy, is held together with a neat trim bezel on top & side edges and only a tiny bit towards the lower section. there's a dew drop style notch out of the screen, which is where the front camera is, & it is not distracting and hasn't been annoying for any apps that we have been assessing. Just on top of this is a tiny speaker grille, and this is great when making phonecalls, which we have found not to be the case with, say, Xiaomi phones with a similar design.

Yet, the screen isn't the best resolution, providing HD+ resolution. That is like the 720p televisions of the older design, & while it does not appear awful in its presentation of details, a Full HD+ screen, like you have with the Motorola G8 Plus. Yes, this handset is slightly less expensive than the Motorola, but the extra resolution would make a large improvement.

There is another frustration with the device's display: take off the screen guard (just as we do with all review phones) & that top layer isn't the greatest at preventing fingerprint marks, and this is a thing we've rarely looked at since the Huawei P10. It doesn't spoil your the phone, however you may have more colored marks than you would want to.

Elsewhere A5 2020 comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, and there's no reason you can't plug headphones in, while the bottom speaker is excellent sounding when delivering sound for apps and music.

Oppo A5 2020 Performance And Battery

Snapdragon 665 CPU
3GB RAM
64GB storage
Dedicated microSD card slot
5000mAh Battery
USB Type-C port
ColorOS 6.0 Android based

Maybe the most impressive thing about A5 (2020) is its battery life. Despite the body not being too thick, it's squeezed a 5,000mAh battery in this device. Considering Galaxy S10 is just 3,400mAh by comparison, you can realise potential of just how much more battery capacity this handset offers.

The time that we have been reviewing The Oppo A5 2020 , it's been delivering about 28 hours of use per charge. If you're not constantly on your phone That is going to give 2 days of working. If you are on your phone a lot, chugging through games and all manner of apps, well then you will still get a full day of use no dramas.

Charging the divice is not ultra quick, yet it is done via USB-C, not Micro USB that many previous models of smartphones.

The handset's battery life is helped by some efficiencies of the smartphone: its display, as we've said, is not the best resolution panel available; & the processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, is not the best chipset on the block.

Now about the last point, however, it's not a big limitation because we've been able to play titles such as Clash Royale without any clunkiness, and while our go-to South Park: Phone Destroyer has provided lag-free & with clear scrolling. Yes, this is the same you'll find in the Motorola G8 Plus.

However, the chipset and amount of RAM (at 3GB), can sometimes let the phone down. Whether that is a just a few seconds extra to wait for something to load up, or a buffering while an game is getting ready, it's only these tiny points that let you realise you are not on a flagship device.

The OS is Oppo's ColorOS, which is a lot like Google's Android operating system, over which ColorOS lays, but with their own upgrades. As a result we don't think the operating system quite as clearly as an Android phone proper. Features like constant notifications from battery management, and nearly every app being placed across several screens & numbered notifications we found annoying at times.

That being said, there are additions like security app for additional security, much customization in the notifications formats, a quick access to favourite apps panel, & app duplication to make use the Dual SIM , but the system won't draw backups for the second app.

Having 2 SIM cards additionally doesn't disallow the possibility of expanding on the on board storage, as there's a dedicated microSD card slot. Very handy if you want heaps of photos, videos & apps on your device - an extra 64GB is unlikely to cost more than a tenner.

The OPPO A5 2020 Cameras

Rear Cameras:
Main: 12-megapixels, f/1.8 aperture
Ultra-wide: 8 megapixel, f/2.25 aperture
Two 2MP depth sensors, f/2.4
Selfie Camera: 8 Megapixel, f/2.0

Camera-wise, The Oppo A5 2020 the 'quad' camera setup, but because two of rear cameras being depth sensors, and the ultra-wide camera does not function you can think of it as only a single lens layout.

The camera app is a little bit slow, but it isn't awful for an base model handset. We have had no issues shooting in low-light environments, and the close-up focus functions well. this is a bit of a rarity in a few phones & cameras.

There isn't too many features. Yes, you have HDR (high dynamic range) to hide those shadow & highlight details, you will not find help for night photos and, as I said, there's no wide option available.

There is a 2x and 5x digital zoom, which crops into pics, and manages and gives a 12MP photo. As for the ultra wide camera, Oppo's website states for panoramic pictures, and we believe this setup is reserved used for panoramics, even though the angle of view when in this mode isn't wide. It was strange.

Any images we have taken with the phone's camera have good, clear detail with good light, but low light causes inevitable softness. That said, for viewing on a phone display or for sharing on socials, this is good.

On the front, there is an 8MP camera which has the usual glut of Oppo's smoothing and face-thinning effects which, we're happy to never use. Each to their own, though, we know there are fans of the 'beautification' options.

Our Results

And if you're after a entry level phone there is many good options, the Oppo A5 2020 amongst them. Its battery life is great, with about two-day {life|between charges, and its display is {large|huge|good sized, and the processor adequate for apps and Youtube.

That said, the screen could be clearer & better resistant to smudges, and the so-called 'quad camera' is overstated, (treat it as a single 12MP main), & some will think the software fussy.

And for the price{, however,|you pay for this Oppo it goes smoothly, and the design is on point, and there's all the showings of a good Motorola G8 Plus competitor here. And, the Oppo A5 2020 isn't as dear.
